My morning started out like most weekdays. After getting ready for work, I decided to take the recycling out to the bend. As you may know, recycling can over take the kitchen table for time to time. I heard something strange. I briefly thought maybe a squirrel under Wes’s truck or something. THINK AGAIN!?!? When I opened the gate, a black puppy magically emerged out from under my car!! Next thing, I know that puppy was on me like a baby chick that has just broken through the egg shell and immediately thinks the 1st thing it sees is Momma. My 1st thought, of course was HOLY SH*T this dog is going to follow me everywhere now!! (As my co-worker said, he saw S-U-C-K-E-R written on my forehead!!) Don’t get me wrong! I LOVE ANIMALS! (Especially cute and cuddly puppies) That’s not the issue. The issue is the 65 lbs English Staffshire Terrier named Blue in our backyard. He isn’t the friendliest of dogs. (He has special needs.) So, I try to shoo the puppy off, which I know is NOT going to happen. I do the 1st thing that I can think of. I squeeze myself through the fence. Well guess who wanted to come to? You guessed it… the puppy!! I still try to shoo him off for his/her good. This puppy is just as hardheaded as I can be… DANGIT!! I finally decide to get Blue in the house b/c I’m not sure what he will do, anything to the puppy. I call Wes.
Meanwhile, the puppy has climbed under the fence and is now scratching, whining, and howling on the back porch. Talk about pulling at the heartstrings!!! Wes suggests that I put the puppy in the back of his truck with some treats. (Now, I ask you. Why would you put treats in the back of the truck unless you were planning on keeping the puppy?) Okay, I’m still afraid for the puppy but it sounds better than anything I thought of. (Oh yea, did I mention that it’s 7:45 by this time. I should be 3/4 of the way to work. But noooo, I’m still in Mebane!!!) I get some treats; put the puppy in the truck bed. The second I put him down in that truck he started jumping and whining. Completely not interested in the treats. He wanted out.
I hurry back to the house, let Blue out, grab my stuff, call Wes back and walk out the front door. I walk around the side of the house and nothing… silence. Then from the back yard I hear Blue bark, growl, and the puppy yelp… I scream and yell NO BLUE. (Yes, Wes was on the phone with me. I’m sure he’s complete deaf in whatever side he had the phone on.) The puppy scrambled, got out the fence, and headed straight for his momma, i.e. ME! GREAT!!! WTH do I do now?? Wes said that he had probably learned his lesson about going under the fence. I try still to shoo him out of my car. I beep the horn so that he would get out of the way. I back-up slowly making sure that I can see him. As I pull off, I look up the driveway and there he is… howling in the middle of the driveway!! What a heartbreaker!!
I don’t mean to sound heartless. I just know that there is no way that even if he doesn’t belong to someone that we can keep him. Blue is the kind of dog that doesn’t get along w/ other dogs.
I guess that we’ll see if he’s still there when we get home. Honestly, I hated just to leave him there. I couldn’t think of anything to do. I don’t think that he was a random stray. He was way too cute and friendly for that. He’s probably a new dog for someone who had him in a pen outside. He escaped and found his way to my house. WTH did it have to be a puppy for crying out loud!?!?
I will tell you this… Hope and pray for Blue’s sake that he doesn’t harm a single thread of fur on that puppy!!!
